Personal story of Michelle Coenen
Hi, I am Michelle Coenen, and I have been working at Boer & Croon since 1 June 2024. Here, I started as a Manager in the Finance & Technology department.
What attracted me to this position was the chance to use my previously acquired knowledge in a new environment. Working with intelligent, young colleagues on diverse and social problems is incredibly cool. We not only come up with solutions, but we implement them. I was also attracted to Boer & Croon's entrepreneurial, young, ambitious culture, which has a 'get it done' mentality.
Background and Experience:
I have a broad academic background, with a BSc in Business Administration, an MSc in Management of Innovation, and an MSc in Accounting and Financial Management (all from Erasmus University), as well as theoretical training to become a Registered Accountant (University of Amsterdam).
Before joining Boer & Croon, I worked in audit at KPMG. Here, I learned how important it is to know a company well to assess and control risks. I now apply the knowledge and skills I gained there, such as project management, stakeholder management, and client management, to my current projects.
My Daily Tasks and Responsibilities:
At Boer & Croon, every day is different; the work varies daily from project to project. I am currently working on a project for Geldmaat. Depending on the day, I start at Geldmaat, at the office at Boer & Croon, or work from home. I start my day by making a to-do list and discussing it with my client.
Projects and Challenges:
My project for Geldmaat is the first one I am carrying out at Boer & Croon. In the beginning, it was a bit of a search for the right structure and how best to implement the client's wishes, but gradually, this became clearer and clearer. The biggest challenge is getting to know the client organisation well and understanding how the lines run so that I can fulfil my assignment as well as possible. Fortunately, I received guidance from Boer & Croon and the client.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
Cooperation with the other Boer & Croon teams is straightforward. Although I may be carrying out this assignment on my own, there are also other Boer & Croon colleagues at this client. In addition, a lot of knowledge is also shared within Boer & Croon about solutions and how to carry out assignments through training courses, brainstorming sessions, and simply at the coffee machine.
Personal Growth and Development:
The Manager of Finance and Technology role allows me to apply my knowledge differently and helps me think about a company's future. This role encourages 'out-of-the-box' thinking and entrepreneurship. In addition, I act as a sparring partner for CFOs and CEOs, which helps me raise my profile and participate in higher-level thinking.
Corporate Culture and Work Environment:
For me, Boer & Croon's corporate culture feels very warm. I received a very warm welcome here, and it still is. Everyone is interested in and wants to get to know each other. In addition, everyone is very approachable and open to sharing knowledge and helping each other. I enjoy working with many young, brilliant colleagues with different backgrounds. This allows you to learn a lot from each other in an approachable way.
Because many colleagues work with the client during the week, Friday is a real Boer & Croon office day. Almost everyone is in the office then. In the morning, people often work hard to finish off the week, and in the afternoon, they frequently organise training sessions or drink coffee with other colleagues to keep up to date with what everyone is doing. Closing with drinks on Friday, of course. It's an excellent start to the weekend!
We also do many fun things, including sailing with the department, Friday afternoon drinks, and company hockey, contributing to the mutual atmosphere.
Advice to New Employees:
My advice? Jump into the deep end and take up the challenge. Boer & Croon is an enterprising organisation with a strong safety net to catch you when things go wrong, but you must dare jump first.
In addition to hard skills in finance and technology, entrepreneurship, organisational sensitivity, and humour are essential. If you're hired at Boer & Croon, you'll be OK with those!
