An interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is appointed for a specified period of time as the general manager, delegated executive or chair of the board of a company. The role of the interim CEO depends on the kind of company. That is an executive board in one model. In another model, in addition to the executive or day-to-day management, which in this form is usually called management, or the Executive Board. The Executive Board meets less frequently and decides on the company's strategy.

There are plenty of reasons why a company might decide to bring in an interim CEO. An interim CEO can be appointed to temporarily replace the CEO in their absence, or to ensure the continuity of the organisation if a new and definitive appointment of a CEO is delayed.
