Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed the way we are working, including in the finance sector, revolutionizing processes, enhancing efficiency, and enabling predictive analysis. However, as AI becomes increasingly pervasive, it also brings with it certain risks and challenges that must be addressed to ensure fair and ethical practices. In the finance sector the use of AI in credit risk analysis and fraud detection is becoming common, but the hidden biases present in the underlying data can perpetuate discrimination.

While algorithms are designed to avoid explicit discrimination based on factors like ethnicity, the complexity of AI models can lead to unintentional discrimination. Historical (minority) biases can be ingrained in the data used for training AI algorithms. As a result, these biases can be perpetuated in credit risk analysis and other financial decision-making processes, hindering fair and equal opportunities for individuals.

AI operates based on sophisticated algorithms that continuously learn and improve. However, this complexity poses challenges when it comes to comprehending how AI systems make decisions. As AI algorithms process vast amounts of data, including historical information that may contain discriminatory patterns, unraveling the decision-making process becomes difficult. This lack of transparency raises concerns regarding accountability and the need for measures to identify and rectify potential biases.

Lack of comprehensive laws
Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive laws and regulations specifically tailored to monitor and mitigate the risks associated with AI. However, recognizing the urgency of addressing this issue, there are ongoing efforts to enact legislation, such as the forthcoming vote in the EU Parliament, aimed at regulating AI in various sectors.

Measures can be put in place to minimize risks and promote transparency. One fundamental step is to inform end-users when they come into contact with AI technology. This transparency helps individuals understand that certain decisions, such as credit risk assessments, are made by AI algorithms. It could be taken under consideration to enforce companies with a size of over 100 people to appoint AI officers, similar to the GDPR's data protection officers. AI officers would oversee the usage of AI within their organizations, and ensure compliance with forthcoming AI regulations and facilitate proactive measures such as conducting workshops on ethical AI practices and pursuing compliance audits.

AI is here to stay. All organizations will eventually integrate it in their daily operations. But they must be aware of the risks and commit themselves to responsible AI usage.
